yesterday’s Salon, while intimate in attendance, exceeded all of our expectations in terms of the dialogue it created. amazing to sit and talk to intelligent young artists and see what comes out. maybe all hope for our future isn’t lost.

many thanks to Drew for hosting, to Michael for letting us into this early part of his creative process, and to our attendees - and a special shout out to Panicked Productions Managing Director Glenn De Kler for taking time out of his busy R&G rehearsal schedule to drop by. We’re looking forward to a long company-friendship.

Michael Norton has written a play. Or at least he’s started on it.

This is a play about where we are in the world today. It is a 9/11 Memorial Play - but it also isn’t a 9/11 Memorial Play. It is a play about having been a little kid ten years ago - and what those ten years have meant to grow up with. We have lived through history and now kids younger than us are learning about what we’ve been a part of.

This is a play about community. About the world we live in today and the people we share it with.

It is a brilliant play by a fresh young voice in the theater world. We’re damn proud to have commissioned this play and we’re excited to present a sneak-peak of sorts with The Think Tank Salon.

We’re officially Fractured Atlas members as of today. This is a big step for us and we figured we’d share the news! This means we’re able to apply for fiscal sponsorship as a 501(c)3 and get all sorts of other great things - like health insurance!

Hi there, everyone - this is Wright North, Think Tank Theater’s playwright-in-residence. As Drew promised, the fall is going to have some promising things coming from us including regular updates on a new piece I’m writing. More about that in the next Dispatch, though.

Right now, I have a question that needs your answers.

Imagine, if you will, a community on Long Island/in the Hamptons where two booksellers divide the community in The Great Bookseller War. A relatively well-off community, though by no means super-rich. Now, if a famous modern author were to appear in the play to save the day (or at least try to) - or a caricature of a famous modern author, perhaps - who would you want to see?

It is ballsy, ‘heretical’, brilliant, infinitely quotable, and (mostly) spot-on.

The man has us thinking about what comes in the next weeks before we were prepared to move our minds to that spot. Excellent.

Dispatches from the Think Tank - Issue 1

We’re going to try something here - a semi-regular (as in, whenever we want to) dispatch-y newsletter. Just to bring everything together in a nice neat package. If you want it in your inbox, please email thinktanktheater@gmail.com with the subject line “Dispatches!” and we’ll get that going. It might be different from the Tumblr version, it might not… you’ll have to wait and see.

So let’s get started, then!

Issue One.

General Business:

Thanks to everyone who came out this weekend for The Atheist. We had a better-than-expected showing in The Greenhouse and (from what we’ve been told) the LiveFeed was a huge success too. If you watched even five minutes of the show, we’re so thankful - and we hope you liked what you saw. As your program noted, we will return.

However, its August. Nobody likes August, right? Its hot and sweaty and the only thing worth doing on a weekend is drinking on the porch to get ready for Mad Men.

So, Drew’s going to be doing a little aesthetic work (once he gets over his PSD - Post-Show Depression) and archival stuff. We’ll put up a few pictures from TP000 - that rare performance in the halls of Gasson Tower - and bandy about some ideas for our next production.

Fun Thing To Note:

We’re going to open up some new “sections” of the blog (denoted by the little hashtag things at the bottom of a post… those do show up with this theme, right?) including a Work-in-Progress section. As we start to consider both upcoming productions and work on new plays, we’ll post fun tidbits about anything we’re working on. That might be a picture that inspired Drew to write a play, a teaser of a potential set or costume piece, or even just a song that means something to us in the moment. We’ll try to keep it organized with the hashtags, we promise.

That’s really it, for now. Thanks once again to anyone who was a part of/viewer of/friend of/lover of/hater of The Atheist - it was one hell of a gala event.
